Food provides two things for us. The energy for life and the material needed for growth and repair of our body tissue. It breaks down into three groups and the energy system into two approaches.
The only essential food group is Protein. This is the group that provides the building material and only secondarily some fuel – where it takes the path of providing glucose. How much protein we need depends on our life style and size. A little more than the calculated figure does little harm but too much ends up as glucose or gets excreted as urine and in extreme cases does kidney damage on the way through.
The next group to consider is carbohydrate. This is – contrary to current marketing wisdom – not an essential group and its only function is the production of glucose for energy. You get four calories per gram of glucose.
To use this the body has to produce insulin and there are two different defects that upset this. First possible issue is that the pancreas doesn’t deliver enough. The second is that the body stops handling it properly. This second issue is frequently the issue for most type 2 diabetics. Our body has a hierarchy for the use of glucose. First allocation goes to the brain, then to the muscles and essential organs, including the heart and liver. Any left goes into fat cells. Insulin resistance generally impacts the muscles while fat cells rarely develop this issue. So what frequently happens is that the diabetic puts on weight while at the same time, his muscles are starving to death. Dieting by cutting back on food results in loss of muscle mass rather than fat so the diet doesn’t really help. In fact quite the opposite.

Finally we come to the third food group, fats. This group again is an energy generator but rather than glucose it produces ketone bodies worth nine calories per gram but the body won’t use this if the blood sugar level is significant. That’s why all that fat in the spare tyre stays there even when an individual cuts back on their diet. To persuade the body to use fats, you have to cut back on carbohydrates and that does mean a few days (for me about two weeks) of carb flu where you do feel a bit like death warmed over.
